Catherine O'Shea is the oldest and most responsible of the three O'Shea sisters. She has just buried her mother, one of the last victims of the flu epidemic of 1918. Her father had been one of the first to succumb to the flu and her fiance was killed in the war. And now there is a detective living at her hotel, the Black Swan, looking into the disappearance of her abusive brother-in-law. He is entirely the wrong person and it is absolutely the wrong time for her to be giving Detective Massey a second look, much less a third and fourth. She'll simply have to control the sparks that fly every time they are together. Quincy Massey just wants to get the little job of finding Ralph Contiello done and go back home to Little Rock, Arkansas. The small town of Huttig is friendly enough but it sure isn't his type of town. And Catherine O'Shea with her smart remarks and red hair is getting under his skin entirely too much. Quincy's unstoppable quest for the truth and Catherine's unflappable determination to keep it hidden immediately sets the two of them at odds. In order to look towards a future with its offer of unconditional love they'll first have to bury the past.

First off I always wonder why Carolyn Brown's books have so few reviews. She's a great author! My guess is that the book covers leave a lot to be desired; you really can't tell what the book is going to be about by looking at them. Such a shame! I don't know if she's classified as "Inspirational", I don't think so but I might be wrong. And people, that is really the best compliment. Cos when I look at Inspirational books I'm looking for a good clean read,I'm not looking to be preached at. Carolyn Brown delivers.Anyway, Here's what I enjoyed about this book: Carolyn makes me laugh out loud with her full-of-life heroines . You never know what is going to happen next but you're going to enjoy it whatever it is!
If you read her other trilogy (Angels and Outlaws) you'll see several similarities with this Black Swan trilogy. In both sets there are three sisters making it on their own. In her previous trilogy they all had black hair and blue eyes, the oldest was tallest and they went down in height as they did with age. A little cliche but that was the way it went. In this trilogy the three sisters had red hair and green eyes. Again, the oldest was tallest and most "sensible" etc etc.
Frankly, in both trilogies I found that the oldest sister's story was the least interesting (though I still enjoyed it) and here's why. It's very simple. The tallest, prettiest, most sensible sister gets the tallest, most sensible and handsome man. I'm sorry but that just doesn't do it for me. I want real life. Real people. Give that handsome man a flaw and I'll like him 100 times more. Same with the heroine. Make her someone we can relate to.
Back to the story! One of the sister has a rotten husband that goes missing. The O'Shea sister's are suspect (as they should be). A handsome detective comes to solve the mystery and stays in the O'Shea's hotel while he susses out their story. Sparks fly , there's some twists and turns and the detective falls in love with one of the sisters.
Now, this is where the author loses me a little, about two thirds of the way through the book, the detective asks Catherine to join him at a beach house he owns in Florida. I'm like "Whaaat?" Ok, no hanky panky goes on but I'm thinking, "This is 1919, how many self respecting women would do that and take the chance of ruining their reputation". It just seemed very unlikely. So I was puzzled and that distracted me from the story.
Also, apart from the physical attraction between Catherine and Quincy I could see no reason why they loved each other. So as a reader I wasn't rooting for them as much as I would if their relationship was a little more deeply based.
I would give this story 4 stars because even though I had several criticisms I still enjoyed the book enough to buy the next two stories in the trilogy. And while this is not a review of the second in series "From thin Air" I'll just say that I am enjoying the second one even more as it focuses on Alice (the so called "dim witted" one) and I like her best. But I won't spoil it for you, you just need to get the whole series and read them all.

Pushin' Up Daisies Black Swan Historical Romance edition by Carolyn Brown Romance eBooks Reviews
There is just enough sixpence to keep the story interesting and you guessing. Will the serious detective uncover the truth about an abusive husbands disappearance? There are 3 books in the series, each focussing on one of the sisters. Great stories. Lots of fun to read.
A lot of interesting things were happening in 1918 so setting two unusual lovers in it makes for an interesting book. Unusual and 3D characters also make it a good read. (3D meaning some romance books focus on a weak, predictable plot and the characters are paper thin; all the characters feel real.)
This a a terrific story. The 3 O'Shea sisters were fun, quirky and different. Very well developed characters, yet they had great respect for each other. The whole premised of the ladies doing away with nasty husband was funny. He's pushing up daisies somewhere! Can't go wrong with Ms. Brown's books. An entertaining read. On to read about Alice, then Bridget! Looking forward to them!
This story started out well but slowly disintegrated. The plot was a good one and the sisters were interesting...at first. The second half of the book just sort of wandered around with no real purpose. The ending was abrupt and not at all satisfying. When you spend a whole book on a mystery, you need to solve the darn mystery! This book just isn't up to Ms Brown's usual standards and I don't feel the need to read the next two books in the series.
Catherine and her sisters run a hotel and restaurant. Something had happened to her youngest sister's husband, but no one knows what.
Quincy had been hired by the husband's family to find out what happened to him. But there are real soaks between him and Catherine.
Suspense and romance, plus a bit of a lesson in history around WWI. Just the type of book I LOVE to read. Going to check out the next one in the series now!
Predictable but I got what I expected and paid for...light, quick an fun reading. I always read one of Carolyn Brown's boks when I have need to relax, giggle inside, and read about good & likeable characters who can be down right oinery wh
The O'Shea sisters, Catherine, Alice and Bridget run the Black Swan Hotel now that both of their have died in the great flu epidemic. The hotel is in the town of Huttig and has a sawmill where most of the residents work.
A detective comes to stay at the hotel looking for Bridget's husband who has disappeared. Taking a vow of silence about the subject, the sisters tell the same story about knowing where he went. He beat Bridget a lot so no one misses him.
This is story of life in the mountains of Arkansas in the early 1900's. It is interesting to read all the things women were allowed to do back then. A tale well told by an expert storyteller.
